Tucson is the oldest city in Arizona, the first city in the United States to be named a City of Gastronomy, and the home of the University of Arizona. Students who participate in the Study Arizona program will get the opportunity to experience Tucson in a variety of ways, including learning about the history of the Native American nations of Arizona, the scientific achievements of Tucson and the University of Arizona, and the rich Mexican American culture embedded within the city. Past Study Arizona excursions include visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the Arizona State Museum, the Center for Creative Photography, the Kitt Peak National Observatory, and the Biosphere 2 research facility.

Advantages of Study Arizona

Academic Benefits: Participating in the Study Arizona program will allow you to take for-credit courses at the University of Arizona. If you are a dual-degree student, the courses you take in Tucson may directly apply to your University of Arizona degree. If you are a partner university student, the courses you take in Tucson can be transferred to your home university degree upon approval from your academic advisor.

Personal Growth: Both inside and outside of the classroom, you will work with and befriend American students and fellow international students, creating long lasting friendships. Students who return from abroad often report feelings of higher confidence, independence, global awareness, and a desire to travel again. You will learn a lot about yourself, your values, and your strengths through your Study Arizona experience.

Professional Development: You will enhance your interculture skills and build your international network by working and engaging with your University of Arizona classmates, professors, and staff. At the University of Arizona’s Main Campus, you will have access to the many academic and career development resources. Are You Eligible?

In order to participate in the Study Arizona program, you must meet the following minimum qualifications. Some colleges may have additional requirements.

  • To participate in the Spring or Fall Study Arizona program, students must by enrolled in a dual-degree program between the University of Arizona and a partner university (microcampus).
  • To participate in the Summer Study Arizona program, students must by enrolled in a dual-degree program between the University of Arizona and a partner university (microcampus) OR students must be enrolled in a program at a participating University of Arizona partner university.
  • The University of Arizona requires students to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 when applying to–and when departing for–their program. Specific colleges within the university may require a higher GPA.
  • Students must be at least 18 years of age, have sophomore class standing (have 30 completed units) by the beginning of the program.
  • Students must have a valid passport and be able to obtain a visa.

How to Prepare

Check Your Academic Eligibility

  • To participate in the Study Arizona program, you must be academically eligible. Speak to your University of Arizona Location Manager and/or academic advisor to determine if you can participate in Study Arizona program during your desired term.

Obtain Your Passport

  • To participate in the Study Arizona program, you must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the program ends. If your passport is expired or will expire soon, this may negatively affect your ability to receive a visa.

Get Your Vaccinations

  • To participate in the Study Arizona program, you must have received two doses of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccination. A single dose vaccination cannot be accepted by our Campus Health facility. In order to enroll you in your course(s), you must have this vaccination.
  • You may receive your immunizations in your home country, however the immunization documentation you submit to Campus Health must be translated into English with Western calendar format dates.

Save Money

  • To receive your immigration document from the University of Arizona, you will need to provide proof of sufficient funding via bank letter/statement, loan award letter, scholarship or merit awards, or outside government/organization sponsorship. An estimated cost of your Study Arizona program will be provided to you.
